4 Reasons We’re Thankful When You Choose Media Captions and Transcription
It’s no surprise that here at cielo24 we believe in the power and importance of media captions and transcription. But do you understand the impact when you choose media captions and transcription, on the world? In short, they open up the Internet to large portions of our global population who would otherwise struggle to use online services. This includes people with hearing loss or deafness, non-English speaking second language learners, and people with learning disabilities. Captions and transcripts even benefit all people, everywhere – disabled or not.
Reasons why we are thankful, this holiday season, for people who choose media caption and transcription!
1. Captions and Transcripts Support People with Hearing Loss or Deafness
Media captions and transcription are a vital service for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Without the inclusion of closed captions on online video, people with hearing loss or impairment have no way to access online video or audio content. In the U.S., about 15% of adults have some level of hearing loss and over 28 million Americans are considered deaf or hearing disabled. Whether you use video for educational purposes, create video advertisements, thought-leadership videos, or how-to product tutorials, making videos accessible to the deaf or hearing impaired is vitally important.
2. Second Language Learners Rely on Captions and Transcripts
Video captions are a vital resource for those learning a new language, improving comprehension for non-native English speakers. Video captions are a great resource to help the 61.8 million people in the U.S. who have a native language other than English engage with your organization. This includes helping them to better follow along in class, take exams, engage with product tutorials, and adopt your brand culture.
3. Media Captions and Transcription Elevate People with Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities affect thousands of people, but most people with learning disabilities either don’t report their disability or are not accommodated. This can hinder their success in business and higher education. Media captions and transcription are one simple way to aide these people and provide missing information for those who might have trouble processing auditory or speech components in media. Below are some statistics published in 2017 by the National Center for Learning Disabilities.
- 1 in 5 children in the U.S. have learning and attention issues, but only a small subset are formally identified with a disability in school.
- 1 in 16 school-age children have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for specific learning disabilities (SLD) such as dyslexia and for other health impairments (OHI), the disability category that covers ADHD and dyspraxia.
- 1 in 50 public school students receives accommodations for disabilities through a civil rights statute called Section 504.
4. Captions and Transcripts Improve Learning Outcomes for All People
Captions in educational videos that are meant for students with learning disabilities are also proven to increase test scores for all students. One study conducted by Robert Keith Collins, a professor of American Indian studies at San Francisco State University, found students’ performances on tests improved dramatically when captions were turned on during videos. Those included in the study went from receiving C’s, D’s and F’s in the non-captioned year, to A’s, B’s and C’s in the captioned year. His students also noted that video captions helped them focus and take better notes. With a 1 GPA point increase for his students, Collins became a firm believer in the benefits of captioning.
